Tragedy: a tragedy
by Will Eno
Part satire, part absurdist comedy, this play examines the newsmaking process, in particular, the boundary between noise and information. We’ve all experienced the moment when the reporters have said all there is to be said, and yet, are trapped into saying more, because there is nothing else to do. To quote Beckett, “That passed the time. It would have passed in any case.
In Tragedy, the news team is faced the end of the world. At least, the sun has set, and there’s no indication it will ever rise again. Even the governor can’t decide if it’s appropriate to meet the future by holding hands, or with rioting and looting.
If you listen closely, however, you’ll find that what happens when the reporters run out of words to describe the situation, is that their personal histories leak out around the edges.
Will Eno is a Pulitzer finalist, and winner of an Obie, Drama Desk, and the Lucille Lortel Award, among other honors. Tragedy: a tragedy premiered at the Gate Theatre in London in 2001.
